A rewrite for the Rick Perry presidential nomination campaign, written just for his target audience, the fanatical conservative evangelical Christian fundamentalists and how much the love to hate the Gays.<\/p>\n

Perry’s message in the campaign ad?<\/p>\n

\nI’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian, but you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.
\nAs President, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion. And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage.
\nFaith made America strong. It can make her strong again.
\nI’m Rick Perry and I approve this message.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

FWIW, even Perry’s pollster could not believe it when he saw the ad.<\/p>\n

\nThe anti-gay message rubbed Perry\u2019s pollster Tony Fabrizio, who has done consulting work for gay causes, the wrong way. According to the Huffington Post\u2019s Sam Stein, Fabrizio e-mailed the Perry staffer behind the ad, Nelson Warfield, to tell him the spot was \u201cnuts.\u201d <\/p>\n

Also, just listening to Perry again in this video, I noted that Perry was going to “stop Obama’s war against religion.” Right there, you have the deluded, mindless, ignorance of the conservative evangelical right, summed up in a nutshell. There is no war against religion. Obama is not a Muslim. He is a natural born citizen of these United States. The world IS NOT FLAT!<\/p>\n

Seriously. I have added the additional Category “Know Nothing and Militant Ignorance” to this post. Seems appropriate.<\/p>\n

Here is some actual reporting on the imaginary war on religion. Perry, when asked to explain, cannot, of course, come up with an answer.<\/p>\n

\nEarlier this week, Texas Gov. Rick Perry released a delusional campaign ad promising to end President Obama\u2019s non-existent \u201cwar on religion.\u201d Yet, when pressed to explain just how Obama is waging this imaginary war by CNN\u2019s Wolf Blitzer, Perry was reduced to playing a weak game of guilt by association:<\/p>\n

\n PERRY: We\u2019ve got a federal judge, for instance, in San Antonio that said these kids can\u2019t say an invocation at school. I mean, they say you can\u2019t even use the word \u201cinvocation\u201d at their commencement.<\/p>\n

BLITZER: Is that President Obama\u2019s war on religion?<\/p>\n

PERRY: I\u2019m just giving you some examples of what we\u2019re seeing from the left, of which, I would suggest to you, President Obama is a member of the left and, uh, substantial left of center beliefs.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s difficult to count the problems with Perry\u2019s statement, not the least of which is the fact that the \u201cfederal judge\u201d Perry refers to was appointed in 1994 \u2014 15 years before Barack Obama became president. Even if one disagrees with this judge\u2019s understanding of the separation of church and state, it is impossible to see how the judge\u2019s decision is Obama\u2019s fault.<\/p>\n

More importantly, Perry\u2019s suggestion that Obama can be blamed for everything done by a \u201cmember of the left\u201d would be comic if it weren’t so reminiscent of Joe McCarthy. Blaming Obama for the irrelevant action of a judge who has no tie whatsoever to Obama is no different from blaming Perry for a member of the right\u2019s statement that \u201cfeminists,\u201d \u201cgays,\u201d and \u201clesbians\u201d caused 9\/11.<\/b><\/p>\n
