Imagine a slight rewrite of that great Captain & Tenille song, Love Will Keep Us Together. A rewrite for the Rick Perry presidential nomination campaign, written just for his target audience, the fanatical conservative evangelical Christian fundamentalists and how much the love to hate the Gays.

Perry’s message in the campaign ad?
I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian, but you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.
As President, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion. And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage.
Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again.

FWIW, even Perry’s pollster could not believe it when he saw the ad.
The anti-gay message rubbed Perry’s pollster Tony Fabrizio, who has done consulting work for gay causes, the wrong way. According to the Huffington Post’s Sam Stein, Fabrizio e-mailed the Perry staffer behind the ad, Nelson Warfield, to tell him the spot was “nuts.”

Also, just listening to Perry again in this video, I noted that Perry was going to “stop Obama’s war against religion.” Right there, you have the deluded, mindless, ignorance of the conservative evangelical right, summed up in a nutshell. There is no war against religion. Obama is not a Muslim. He is a natural born citizen of these United States. The world IS NOT FLAT!

Here is some actual reporting on the imaginary war on religion. Perry, when asked to explain, cannot, of course, come up with an answer.
Earlier this week, Texas Gov. Rick Perry released a delusional campaign ad promising to end President Obama’s non-existent “war on religion.” Yet, when pressed to explain just how Obama is waging this imaginary war by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Perry was reduced to playing a weak game of guilt by association:
PERRY: We’ve got a federal judge, for instance, in San Antonio that said these kids can’t say an invocation at school. I mean, they say you can’t even use the word “invocation” at their commencement.
BLITZER: Is that President Obama’s war on religion?
PERRY: I’m just giving you some examples of what we’re seeing from the left, of which, I would suggest to you, President Obama is a member of the left and, uh, substantial left of center beliefs.
It’s difficult to count the problems with Perry’s statement, not the least of which is the fact that the “federal judge” Perry refers to was appointed in 1994 — 15 years before Barack Obama became president. Even if one disagrees with this judge’s understanding of the separation of church and state, it is impossible to see how the judge’s decision is Obama’s fault.
More importantly, Perry’s suggestion that Obama can be blamed for everything done by a “member of the left” would be comic if it weren’t so reminiscent of Joe McCarthy. Blaming Obama for the irrelevant action of a judge who has no tie whatsoever to Obama is no different from blaming Perry for a member of the right’s statement that “feminists,” “gays,” and “lesbians” caused 9/11.
