Rather than endless speculation and rumor and wholesale lies and slander which have permeated the media and the blogs, here is the actual document filed by the prosecutor:

Here is what the case boils down to, and why Zimmerman was charged.

Zimmerman was ordered by police not to pursue Martin. He pursued him and shot him to death. That right there is the absolute end of any defense under the stand your ground law. That law does not say, OK, go and pick a fight, and if the person responds and defends themself, then it is OK to shoot them. And I suspect that is why the charge is second degree homicide, and not manslaughter.

I find it non-surprising that those on the ultra right and the full bore racist end of the spectrum are now attacking the prosecutor for being a commie liberal with political ambitions. Why, only two days ago, she was an extremely conservative Republican with excellent bone fides, appointed to this case by the most conservative governor in the history of the state.

If you want to swim in the racist gene pool, you have to look no further than the Fox News web site’s comments. This diary recorded a lot of them, in case Fox scrubbed them from their site. Reading these comments reassures me that my cynicism regarding the d*mned human race remains justified. I just checked the original story on Fox News site, and indeed, the comments have been removed. The blog Little Green Footballs, which is definitely a conservative leaning site, but more rational than most, posted quite a collection of the racist screeds being posted at Fox News in their comments on an earlier news story about the DOJ opening an investigation, as well, back in March. Here again, the article has now been scrubbed of comments by the Fox News team, every fair balanced in their pursuit of truth, justice, and the American way.

The author at Little Green Footballs says there were over 3,000 comments, and as he puts it, before quoting a large selection of comments, then closing afterwards:

OK. That’s all I could take. But the comments like these go on and on and on — there are thousands of them. And many of the ugliest comments received numerous “likes” from other readers.

The right wing base is sick to its core.

Just for the record, here is a sampling of the pearls of wisdom from the posters at Fox News on this story. And I am sure that all of them, if confronted with their racist remarks, would vigorously deny they are racists, and in fact accuse who ever called them a racist a racist for pointing out their racism to them. That is how their minds work.

These people, by the way, are the core supporters the GOP has sought to gather under their banner as reliable voters since the emergence of the so-called “Southern Strategy” several decades ago, when it became necessary to pretend you were not a racist.
